A long-running MMOs on the market is set to make the leap from the virtual desktop to the physical real world, as RuneScape will get two tabletop games in 2022.

RuneScape developer Jagex has partnered with Steamforged Games to launch both a board game as well as the core book for tabletop RPGs in the works. The games should be "inspired by the rich fantasy of RuneScape's realm and the world of Gielinor" and will deliver "fresh-but-faithful renditions of old-fashioned characters and quests that incorporate iconic elements from the games into thrilling interactive experiences designed to be played on tabletops".

It is a RuneScape board game is played by one to five players. The game will feature quest-based adventures through Gielinor. Players "will earn RuneScape Gold to create and upgrade their equipment, upgrade the characters they play, prepare unique recipes, communicate with NPCs and test their abilities while exploring various regions around the world, along with a myriad of intriguing side quests designed to divert and entertain them along the route."

The TTRPG is scheduled to launch in the form of "a richly illustrated, hardback core book with rules for players who want to play an RuneScape tabletop role-playing game". Jagex claims that the book "is fully compatible with the rules of fifth edition of the world's favorite tabletop game for roleplaying" It is likely to be Dungeons and Dragons, although the exact details aren't clear.

"After nearly 21 years exclusively accessible online, it's exhilarating to collaborate with Steamforged to develop and bring new RuneScape adventure games for players on the tabletop," said Phil Mansell as Jagex's CEO. Jagex in a statement.

"Steamforged is honored to partner with Jagex and to use our years of experience changing video games in order to introduce one of the played online role-playing games onto tabletop gaming," said Mat Hart, creative director and CCO of Steamforged.

RuneScape is the latest of the growing number of games on video that Steamforged Games has modified for tabletop gaming. Steamforged Games already released games for the board inspired by the likes of Monster Hunter World, and both a board game as well as TTRPG in Dark Souls.

The two RuneScape games are expected to release in the coming year. But, while TTRPG game will "heading straight to retailers" and this board game is expected to be launched on Kickstarter. This could cause some to be disappointed OSRS account players, since board games available on the crowdfunding platform are typically very scarce and prices in the secondary market soaring for rarer releases

But, Mansell said, "by the launch of the board game through crowdfunding platforms, Steamforged is mirroring our method of involving RuneScape communities to take this game onto table top."

It is also under scrutiny as a platform following the announcement of plans to move to a backend using blockchain.
