RuneScape is getting its own Tabletop Games
Steamforged Games has announced that its the well-known MMORPG RuneScape will receive both a board game as well as a the core book for tabletop RPGs in 2022.
RuneScape is among the earliest examples in the MMORPG genre, and it is still regarded in the top ten games available on the market since its launch in the beginning of January 2001. The game that was once a browser-based experience has had a variety of different versions with a huge players, ranging from Old School RuneScape offering players with the classic game experience of 2006 and the comparatively short-lived DarkScape giving players the more PvP-focused experience. Today, the developer Jagex has joined forces with the developer of board games Steamforged Games to release not only one two tabletop games during 2022.
Steamforged Games' partnership in partnership with Jagex is the latest in a string of collaborations that bring the biggest gaming franchises to a tabletop. Steamforged Games, a tabletop gaming giant, has previously developed board games based off of popular series such as Monster Hunter World and Dark Souls and recently finished an enormously successful crowdfunding campaign for the Resident Evil 2 board game which raised more than 1 million GBP during the course of the year. The developer is looking to enter Gielinor's world and RuneScape and plans to release the board game as well as an RPG book for tabletop gaming in the next year.
The two RPG versions will include a variety of the most well-known characters from RuneScape and places, allowing groups of five or more players to take on the classic quests of RuneScape to bring fun that take place in Gielinor home. Players will be able build and upgrade their equipment with OSRS Gold earned through quests, interact with NPCs as well as take on various side quests that are inspired by the legendary MMORPG. The board game will be launched by means of an Kickstarter campaign later in the year. Meanwhile, the main tabletop RPG book will be available in retail stores.
The book that is the core for tabletop RPGs is notably compatible with the massive tabletop RPG Dungeons and Dragons the fifth edition of the core books, allowing dungeon kings to seamlessly incorporate elements from RuneScape into their games. Jagex President Phil Mansell was optimistic about the project, expressing his excitement regarding this Kickstarter campaign "involving communities from RuneScape groups," while Steamforged CCO Mat Hart believed the "rich RuneScape universe will be a joy to translate" into a tabletop-based setting.
RuneScape has grown significantly from its original browser-based roots in recent years , with Steamforged's board game being the most recent offering from Jagex. Interviews with Game Rant last July, numerous Jagex employees talked about the idea of transitioning Runescape's mobile game into an open-platform version. Also in September, Jagex partnered with the creator of the popular Old School RuneScape mod RuneLite HD to bring the HD version accessible to all 2007 RS Accounts players. Steamforged's board game is set to launch in the coming months and provide the RuneScape community with a new opportunity to explore this world Gielinor and to create their own adventure.
